Written by Ma Zhiyuan (C.1250-1321) during the Yuan Dynasty, "Heavenly Pure Sand: Autumn Thoughts" is one of the most poignant quatrains in Chinese literature. In just a few lines, it paints an image of a desolate landscape – an old man on a journey, withered vines, and a setting sun – evoking the deep sorrow of homesickness and solitude.
Withered vines, old trees, crows at dusk,
A small bridge, flowing water, cottages hushed.
Ancient road, west wind, a lean horse plods,
The sun sinks low –
A heartbroken traveler, lost and alone.
